Today, we explore this UNESCO-listed town (since 1997) on a crisp winter morning, perfect for visiting Vietri Italy with kids without the summer crowds.
The Amalfi Coast can seem tricky to explore with children, even for locals. Tight hairpin bends, limited parking, and busy summer traffic often make trips challenging. On a January Saturday, we decided to head to Vietri sul mare, the first town you encounter on the Amalfi Coast. From here, many other charming villages follow, from Cetara to Ravello, Amalfi to Praiano, ending in Positano.
Our walk through Vietri had no strict itinerary; we simply wanted to enjoy the sea air and wander its streets. A kind of day you won’t often find in guides for “things to do in Vietri Italy with kids,” but here’s a real-family perspective.

What to see in Vietri Italy? Let’s start with a walk through the historic center along Corso Umberto I. We had no trouble parking in the first lot you encounter upon arriving in Vietri (the one with a barrier, around €2 per hour). Even the parking areas are decorated with ceramics. In this one, you’ll find charming fish-shaped planters, each in a different color, and the typical ciucciariello of Vietri, which became a symbol of Vietri ceramics for its historical role in transporting goods across the Amalfi Coast’s steep hills, hairpin bends, and cliffs.
Vietri Artisan Ceramics Shops
A must-see in Vietri Italy are the artisan shops selling ceramics. They follow one after another, offering an overwhelming variety. Vases, plates, cups, and wall items feature the vibrant colors typical of Vietri maiolica: sea blue, lemon yellow, turquoise of the coves… You can’t leave Vietri without buying at least one cup!
All shop facades are decorated with colorful tiles displaying the shop or artisan family name, making each unique. Even the alleys are bursting with color. Kids can enjoy a real “tile hunt,” spotting tiles embedded in walls and floors, as well as hand-painted water and electricity meters showing everyday Mediterranean life.

Vietri Ceramics Outlet: World-Famous Plates and Tiles
Vietri ceramics are among the most sought-after in the world: bold colors, marine decorations, fish, lemons, and geometric patterns that reflect the Amalfi Coast tradition. Walking through the shops, you’ll find beautiful decorated plates and ceramics perfect as souvenirs or collectible pieces.
Kids love this part of the visit too. Every shop is a small world of colors, smiling animals, giant lemons, and vivid tiles—a true detail hunt that turns the stroll into a game.

Solimene Ceramics Factory: Vietri’s Iconic Building
Continuing to the end of the historic center, on the left, you’ll see the Solimene artisan ceramics factory, instantly recognizable by its unique architecture. From afar, you’ll notice huge concrete cones with about 16,000 red and green ceramic vases inverted and embedded in the facade. Designed and built in the 1950s by architect Paolo Soleri for the Solimene ceramics family, it’s one of Vietri Italy’s iconic buildings.
Here, vases, tableware, floors, and wall tiles are made entirely by hand in the typical Vietri style and exported worldwide. Visitors can tour the factory, purchase products, or have them shipped.
Villa Comunale: The Public Park of a Thousand Colors
Walking straight ahead on foot, on the right, you’ll find Villa Comunale of Vietri, inaugurated in 2007. It’s a public park with breathtaking views of the Gulf of Salerno.
At first glance, it feels like Parc Güell in Barcelona. The railings look like long snakes, their skin covered with colorful Vietri ceramic tiles. The villa also includes a small amphitheater hosting events and concerts in summer.
There are no swings or rides here, but kids always know how to have fun. Ours ran, played hide-and-seek, and climbed among the colorful walls. It’s one of the best viewpoints to observe Vietri Italy from above.
Walking to Marina di Vietri: A Scenic Stroll
Having parked in the historic center, we decided to continue on foot to reach the sea. A local gentleman kindly offered to guide us down to Marina di Vietri.
It’s an unforgettable walk. Along the way, we enjoyed stunning views, including Crestarella Beach with its 16th-century watchtower, now a wedding venue, and the Due Fratelli Rocks, two almost identical rock formations rising from the sea.
The Two Brothers Rocks: Vietri’s Famous Sea Formations
Several legends surround these two rocks. One tells of two shepherd brothers who tried in vain to save a young girl swimming in suddenly rough waters. Neither the shepherds nor the sheep survived, and King Poseidon turned the brothers into the two rocks and the sheep into smaller stones.
Marina di Vietri Square
Walking along the Marina di Vietri promenade, you reach the small square. In summer, many restaurants set up outdoor tables (we found them closed on a Saturday lunch, but call ahead as they might be open on Sundays).
The square features a beautiful permanent nativity scene recently restored by local residents and a small playground where kids love to stop.

Colorful Alleys of Vietri Italy
From this square, we walked back up to the historic center, passing through a brightly colored alley with blue and pink houses. It’s near the Carabinieri station (Via Giuseppe Pellegrino on Maps).
Other Points of Interest in Vietri Italy
If you stay beyond the morning, don’t miss:
- Vietri Cathedral – Recognizable by its 36-meter-high maiolica dome with yellow, blue, and green tiles. The church dates back to the 10th century in late Neapolitan Renaissance style.
- Provincial Ceramics Museum – Located at Villa Guariglia in the Raito district, featuring religious ceramics, everyday tableware from the 19th century, and Salerno “German period” ceramics. Info: here.
Vietri Beaches
Vietri Italy isn’t just about town walks and ceramics—it’s also about the sea. Beaches to try:
- Crestarella Beach – Right below the tower, easily recognizable from afar. A small cove with a single beach club and limited spots (max 40 umbrellas), making it very peaceful. - Marina di Vietri: it’s divided in two by the Bonea River. On one side, you’ll find beach resorts; on the other, a free public beach. This way, you can choose the area that suits you best. There are plenty of bars and restaurants, and parking costs around €2 per hour in summer (though spaces are limited during peak season).
- Marina di Albori: Albori is one of the hamlets of Vietri sul Mare, home to just 350 residents, and is considered one of the most beautiful villages in Italy. It’s a small rocky cove with crystal-clear waters. If you’re willing to climb about 200 steps, you’ll reach one of the most stunning beaches on the Amalfi Coast. Start at kilometer 48 of the main road and descend the long staircase to get there.
Marina di Vietri Beach
Our favorite beach in Vietri Italy is Marina di Vietri Beach. In summer, it’s crowded with beach clubs, but in winter you can enjoy it in complete freedom, just like we did. A sunny day allowed the kids to play in the sand and collect small pebbles along the shore, giving us a true sense of freedom.
Being able to enjoy such a beautiful spot without navigating through sunbeds and umbrellas is priceless!
How to Reach Vietri Italy
By Car: The fastest way is by car. The Vietri sul Mare exit is the first one when coming from Naples. You can park in the blue-lined lot with a barrier at Piazza Matteotti, right at the entrance to the historic center, or find a spot on the parallel streets near Bar Pasticceria Russo. Alternatively, park near the train station (€2/hour) and take the elevator down to the town entrance.
By Train: Vietri Italy is the only Amalfi Coast town with a train station. You can reach it directly from Naples in about 1 hour and 20 minutes via Trenitalia. An elevator connects the station to Piazza Matteotti, running from 07:00 to 20:00, with glass walls that let you admire the beautiful Vietri ceramics decorating the exterior.
