However, there is a hidden treasure waiting to be explored: the Valle delle Ferriere nature reserve. It is one of the most fascinating routes for those seeking an Amalfi Coast waterfall hike immersed in nature.
The Valle delle Ferriere Trail Along Ancient Ironworks
The Valle delle Ferriere hike leads from the Monti Lattari toward Amalfi, winding through forests and streams. Its name comes from the ruins of medieval ironworks scattered along the route. Most of the trail is free, except a small section managed by FAI, which requires a €5 entrance fee (children under 12 and seniors over 65 enter free).
This hike is diverse, with ever-changing scenery: from forested streams to waterfalls, ending with a walk among watermills that once powered paper mills and lemon terraces. This section resembles some famous waterfall trails on the Amalfi Coast, but it feels much more authentic and natural.
Unique Microclimate, Flora, and Fauna in Valle delle Ferriere
Why recommend the Valle delle Ferriere hike? For children especially, it’s like stepping into an “enchanted forest.” Thanks to the unique microclimate between mountains and sea, you can see plant species from ancient times, such as the rare Woodwardia radicans, a pre-glacial fern. The reserve also hosts the tiny carnivorous plant Pinguicola hirtiflora, now nearly extinct, and, if lucky, the spectacled salamander.

Starting from Pontone
Trail CAI 323 starts at Piazza San Giovanni in Pontone. Take the gently uphill path behind the fountain through the village heading west. After about 200 meters, continue downhill until you reach the main road. Turn right onto the dirt track, which leads in about 45 minutes to the Rudere della Ferriera (244 m), where the path ends at the junction with trail 325.

Our Valle delle Ferriere Trek: From Pontone to Amalfi
We mixed the trails, starting in Pontone (Scala), joining trail 325 to the FAI Reserve, then returning and continuing to Amalfi for a total of 12 km over seven hours, including a picnic, gelato, and a swim. This itinerary is perfect for a full Amalfi Coast hiking experience.
From central Pontone, the trail passes under arches displaying vintage household items: wicker baskets, shoes, clothes, tools, and a small nativity scene. The path is marked with ceramic tiles. We chose the “Giustino Fortunato” trail, which winds through forests, streams, waterfalls, and the rapids of Rio Canneto. It’s one of the most scenic sections, resembling a jungle-like trail, perfect for kids who love exploring.
At the junction toward Amalfi, we went straight to the FAI Reserve (€5). Beyond the entrance, a 300-meter walk leads to a stunning waterfall and the Woodwardia radicans fern—a prehistoric giant unique in Europe. A breathtaking sight for children and nature lovers alike.
Returning toward Amalfi (1.5 hours), we entered a new landscape of lemon groves and old mills powering the famous Amalfi paper mills. It’s one of the most photogenic parts of the hike, ideal for a scenic walk on the Amalfi Coast.
Old machinery, laundry, and Amalfi rooftops are still visible. There’s also a drinking fountain, and the air is fragrant with lemons.
In Amalfi, we strolled through shops, visited the Duomo, and had a picnic by the sea, followed by mandatory gelato—a perfect end to a hike combining nature and history. For the return, steep stairs from Amalfi to Pontone are an option: shorter but challenging.

The trail is 80% shaded and humid, thanks to streams and waterfalls, making it ideal in June, July, and August. In spring or fall, bring a rain jacket and sweatshirt.
